I wanted to host loads of dance teachers together under one roof to bring all their different styles to the local children!
I set a status and asked all my choreographer friends if they would be interested in helping me get this off the ground, see if it is successful and then potentially run an annual event.
The response I got was overwhelming from both the choreographers and the parents! This vision was a definite!
I wanted 6 teachers to teach 6 different styles over a whopping 6 hours and that’s what I looked at organising.
We had 4 teachers travel from London and 2 local teachers join us for the day.
We managed an enormous workshop covering:

Vogueing
House
Lyrical hip hop
Krumping
Commercial hip hop
Afrobeats
After each 2 hour session I asked the children for feedback
Hayley teaching Vogueing – “the workshop was sassy and posey, it was amazing”
"Hayley is funny and kind, she made sure everyone got involved and looks pretty and smelled lovely”
Jordan teaching House – “it was hard and fast very jumpy and energetic”
"Jordan is funny and it went over it if we didn’t get it, he has good timing and rhythm”
Harry teaching Lyrical hip hop – “the workshop was amazing fantastic song choice and very energetic”
"Harry is kind and expressive and fun"
Hannah teaching Krumping – workshop was “sick and inspirational”
“Hannah is an amazing dancer and kind”
Olu teaching afrobeats –“the workshop was so different brilliant but different"
"Olu is so nice and explained all the moves it was very energetic"
Bismark teaching Commercial hip hop “the workshop was amazing, some bits were hard but we kept doing them"
"Bismark is so funny and happy, we learned loads"

I spent hours organising this workshop and every hour was worth it, It all came together to be a brilliant amazing day and what an opportunity for those children, I would most definitely organise another workshop – maybe over 2 days next time? Watch this space... I feel another vision on the horizon ☺

Competition Time!

https://www.juliesdance.co.uk/jdblog/competition-time

https://www.juliesdance.co.uk/jdblog/competition-time#comments

Julie

The Street dance International qualifiers day competition took place on Sunday April 2nd..I have been meaning to write this blog but have been so busy organising other events that time has run away with me. These competitions give the children something great to work towards and I have a lot of respect for anyone that chooses to organise them!
As a teacher it is up to me to ensure each child dances in the right category, they all have their numbers displayed correctly, they have the right attire on and that they are smiling and happy on the day!
I didn’t really have any issues with this competition and everything ran smoothly! I have been attending competitions now for over 16 years so I feel like I’m quite clued up on the rules and all the drama that goes along with competing, but that still doesn't stop me getting butterflies every time a child I teach is on... so competition days usually consist of me experiencing every emotion going and yes this usually includes tears!
We had qualifiers in each category from solos, pairs, groups and teams to electric boogie. The children have been practising for this day since we came back from the Christmas break and all the dancers achieved a personal best (even if they didn’t qualify, they were all amazing) Some children even fought in rounds that had over 30 competitors dancing against them and were still not phased at all! They are all so brave!
We have been busy fundraising for the finals day and are hoping to pay for each of the children’s competition ticket... This is a staggering £720.00 and we are achieving this goal with the support of local businesses, which makes us feel like such a part of a community and is a lovely opportunity for the children!
I have enjoyed being tagged in so many photos from proud parents and happy children! It's days like that which make my job so worthwhile!

~Julie xx

Upcoming Events in April!

https://www.juliesdance.co.uk/jdblog/upcoming-events-in-april

https://www.juliesdance.co.uk/jdblog/upcoming-events-in-april#comments

Uncategorized

We've got a few different things on offer for adults at the studio this month, we have an aerial yoga taster session, a salsa workshop and our Ballroom and Latin classes are starting back with a six week course! Read on for more information on all of these! Aerial Yoga Taster Session - April 9thThis event is now full, but regular classes will soon be coming to the studio with Elevate to Fitness! The innovative and unique Anti Gravity® fitness technique [...]

We've got a few different things on offer for adults at the studio this month, we have an aerial yoga taster session, a salsa workshop and our Ballroom and Latin classes are starting back with a six week course!

Read on for more information on all of these!

Aerial Yoga Taster Session - April 9th

This event is now full, but regular classes will soon be coming to the studio with Elevate to Fitness!

The innovative and unique Anti Gravity® fitness technique was invented by the visionary Christopher Harrison. It was lovely to watch them perform the routines they've been working hard on since Christmas and see how they've grown over the years. A few of the competitors from Solent Fitness & Aerial Arts have competed in all 4 of the competitions since it first started running, including my own daughter - and it's really amazing to see how far they have all come since those early days!

As a venue, with events like this you always worry about injury so you are on edge until it is all over!! I'm happy to report that there were no injuries on Sunday, just lots of happy children, teens and parents! I'm looking forward to teaching the Solent Fitness & Aerial Arts youth students when their regular instructor Zorena goes on maternity leave soon!

This event is an example of the many different types of events we run or have run at the studio, here's a few others: various children's dance competitions, numerous charity events/shows/parties, comedy nights, open mic nights, ladies nights, family social nights, quiz nights, various dance workshops for children AND adults, and live music nights. We have also hosted a christening, a wedding ceremony projector showing, a charity fitness modelling competition and even a wedding!

3 times a year we offer the studio out for charity events where only the staff wages are charged for, this opportunity has been taken up this year by: the Children's Cancer trust, Macmillan Cancer trust and the Alzheimers & Dementia Trust.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE organising all of the above events, I enjoy the preparation and organisation that goes into it, and I especially love the end result and receiving positive feedback from hirers and guests! There is a lot to think about with running events at the studio, some considerations I have to take into account include: event ratios, DBS checks, first aid, insurance, catering needs etc. I also pay out a lot of money each year for the premises licence which includes live music, alcohol and the showing of movies! That is all before I even start thinking about the specific requests and demands for each individual event!! It is all worth it though! I have a brilliant team of helpers who help me set up, run and clear up after events!

I'm currently trying to organise a 6 hour dance workshop for local children in the Easter holidays with several different guest instructors - this is taking a lot of organisation trying to tie all the teachers together for the right dates and times etc.!

I always try to ask people for feedback after hosting their event or after they've attended an event as a guest and people tend to comment on the friendly and professional staff I have, whom I am very proud of and so blessed to have and work with! People are also always surprised at the size of the venue, and how we try to make the event individual to the requirements and goals of the event! I do try to go above and beyond the normal duties that other venues offer to make the event one to remember!

Any ideas for what events I can plan next are welcome in the comments!!!

Thanks for reading,

Julie x

Studio Staff Interviews - Charlotte

https://www.juliesdance.co.uk/jdblog/studio-staff-interviews-charlotte

https://www.juliesdance.co.uk/jdblog/studio-staff-interviews-charlotte#comments

Charlotte's School of Dance

Studio Staff Blog

This week we continue our introductions for our regular studio hirers!
